Outdoor dining in central Östersund – best food on Prästgatan

One of the questions our guests ask most often is: "Where do you eat well here in the centre – ideally outside?" The good news is Östersund is in solid shape on that front, especially in summer. And most of it is within a few minutes' walk from Hotel Emma on Prästgatan.

Coffee and classics – Wedemarks

We start where many of our guests start (and where we send people for breakfast). Wedemarks Konditori is a stone's throw away on Prästgatan. It's a proper classic konditori with pastries, buns, cakes and good coffee. Many guests say it feels like "real Östersund fika". It isn't hip or trendy – it's just good and reliable. Perfect for breakfast, an afternoon coffee, or just when you want to sit for a while.

Outdoor terraces in the centre

When it warms up, several places in the centre open outdoor terraces. There's a nice mix:

  • Relaxed spots for a beer or a glass of wine outside.
  • Restaurants that roll out summer menus and let guests linger.
  • Places for a proper meal or just something small.

Our guests often mention how nice it is to walk straight out of the hotel without needing a taxi or a plan. Many take a stroll along Prästgatan and Storgatan in the evening, see which terraces have room, and sit down wherever feels right in the moment.

That spontaneous feeling is exactly what works so well here.

Lunch and dinner

For lunch there are several good options within walking distance – classic Swedish dishes, pizza, burgers and more modern cooking. In the evening the focus shifts to outdoor terraces and a slower pace.

Tips from us at Hotel Emma

  • Take a walk in the late afternoon or early evening – easy to see which places have a good spot and free tables.
  • Want a recommendation for the night? Ask reception. We usually know what's busy and what's quieter.
  • Combine dinner with an evening walk down by the water. Only a few extra minutes.

Summary

Central Östersund has a nice mix of cafés, lunch spots and outdoor terraces – and most of it is comfortable walking distance from Hotel Emma. It isn't a big city, but it's just right: personal and easy. Exactly how many of our guests want it.
