Jamtli in Östersund – opening hours, tickets & tips 2026

We've been there many times, both with hotel guests and on our own, and it's always worth it. Especially if you like history, art, or just want to walk around outside and get a feel for the soul of Jämtland.

What is Jamtli, actually?

Jamtli sits in the middle of Östersund and consists of:

• The regional museum – history of Jämtland and Härjedalen
• Nationalmuseum Jamtli – art and design from the Nationalmuseum collections
• The open-air museum – old houses and historical settings

In summer the open-air museum becomes Jamtli Historieland. The area fills with actors living in different periods of history. Kids love it, but honestly so do adults. There's something special about walking into a 19th-century house and suddenly finding yourself chatting with a "farmer" from that era.

Opening hours and tickets 2026

Opening hours change with the season, so always check Jamtli's own website before visiting. Here's what applies right now:

The indoor exhibitions (regional museum + Nationalmuseum Jamtli) are typically open 11:00–17:00 during the same period. Outside the summer season hours are more limited, but the museum is open year-round. Prices are lower off-season.

Tips to make the most of your visit

• Start with Historieland if it's open. Walking around the old houses takes time.
• Don't miss the Överhogdal tapestries – they're genuinely ancient and unique.
• There's a café on site. Handy for a break and a cinnamon bun.
• Visit Nationalmuseum Jamtli too – a nice contrast to the older history.
• Travelling with kids? There's plenty for them: play, meeting "historical characters", and space to run around.

How to get there from Hotel Emma

It's roughly a 15–20 minute walk from Hotel Emma on Prästgatan. You walk straight through the centre and it's a pleasant stroll. Alternatively take the bus or drive – there's parking on site.

Many of our guests like to pair Jamtli with a coffee at Wedemarks afterwards, or just head back to the hotel to rest.

A good base for exploring Östersund

Because Hotel Emma is right in the centre, Jamtli is one of the easiest attractions to reach. Many guests spend a morning or afternoon there and are back at the hotel in good time to rest or head out for dinner.

That's exactly the kind of easy experience you want when you stay centrally.
